About Us
Tally’s, a fifth generation family business, has provided church supplies to New England churches for over 135 years. Over the last four decades, chaplains and military purchasing agents have utilized our services. We have made use of the internet to reach religious communities around the globe.
Patrick Tally, our great-great grandfather, emigrated from Ireland to Providence with his wife and family in 1854. He was a steamship agent. In September 1879 he established a Catholic book store in conjunction with his emigration agency. Prayer books and devotional articles were available to the Irish immigrants. The enterprise soon branched out to related religious items including liturgical appointments.
As more European Catholics relocated in Providence, the business thrived. In 1895, we began selling fresh Florida palm for Palm Sunday celebrations. The operation was taken over by Joseph V. Tally in 1938. In 1962 the venture moved to Broadway from the shadow of the Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul due to the gentrification of the downtown area. Tally’s first mail order catalog was published in 1976. Personable Phil led the company until his death in December 1997.
Today, the Tally family still directs the company consisting of a retail store, digital & print catalog, and liturgical consulting service. Tally’s moved to its present location in July of 2005. We are conveniently located minutes from Interstate 95 at 1150 Pontiac Ave in Cranston, RI. Stop by for a visit.
